The province and city of Groningen are celebrating their volunteers – including many expats and internationals – with a month-long campaign leading up to International Volunteer Day on December 7. In collaboration with various local organizations, the initiative aims to highlight the contributions of all who dedicate their time and efforts to the community.
“We want to thank everyone for their dedication,” said Mintsje Boersma, one of the campaign organizers, in an interview with broadcaster RTV Noord. “This includes all kinds of activities – whether it’s working at a sports club bar, serving coffee in neighborhood centers, or volunteering in board positions,” she added.
As part of the campaign, organizers plan to visit different community initiatives to show appreciation for volunteers’ work. Residents are also encouraged to recognize the volunteers around them, either in person or by posting on the campaign’s online “Wall of Fame.”
The campaign will culminate on December 6, the day before International Volunteer Day, with visits to volunteers across the region to express gratitude for their contributions. The celebration is scheduled for this day to accommodate weekend schedules.
