Groningen is getting a new neighbourhood, Stadshaven, which will be able to accommodate residents as of 2026.
The GIC reported that Stadshaven, located between Damsterdiep and the Sontweg, will have space for 3,300 homes. It will also have 33,000 square metres of commercial and social office spaces and a park. The streets of the neighbourhood will be car-free. Instead, there will be cycling and walking lanes and extra squares.
Alderman Rik van Niejenhuis said this is great news for people looking for a home in Groningen.
“If everything goes according to plan we’ll start the groundwork in the spring of 2025 after which we hope to welcome the first residents in 2026,” he said..”
To make room for the neighbourhood the industrial estate that stretches along the Eemskanaal will be demolished. However, the characteristic buildings of the area, like the EMG-silo and Cova-chimneys will stay to create a balance between modern and historical buildings.
