A recent analysis by insurance comparison site Independer found that of the three northern provinces, Groningen has the highest rate of car theft.

In 2018, 137 cars were reported stolen in the province of Groningen, whereas Friesland and Drenthe both had fewer than 100 thefts (93 in Friesland and 94 in Drenthe). On the national level, the province of North Holland experienced the most car thefts in the country with 2,899 vehicles reported stolen.
The city of Groningen had the most car break ins in the north last year: 396. Assen had 69 and Leeuwarden had 118. The most common targeted items from car break in were navigation systems, car radios, items in the glove compartment and other car parts such as airbags, rims and headlights.
