Two Groningen delicacies have secured their place among the tastiest fudges in Europe: confectioner Yvonne van Rooij’s whiskey and salmiak fudges recently won Great Taste Awards in the United Kingdom.

Van Rooij hails from Oude Pekela in the east of the province of Groningen and had always taken pride in her delicious fudge, which is created by mixing sugar, butter and milk over heat and adding other unique flavours. But it took a visit by an English customer to encourage her to participate in the special taste competition in England with her whiskey and salmiak (salty licorice) fudge varieties.
To her surprise, the Groninger Ondernemers Courant reports that a few months after submitting her treats for judgement, Van Rooij received word that her products been awarded prizes by the jury.
Great Taste, which is organised by the Guild of Fine Food, serves as a benchmark for fine food and drink: “the Great Taste logo is the sign you can trust when buying food and drink in your local, quality retailer”, according to the organisation’s website.
