Fines will be issued to people making a nuisance after 22:00
Mayor Koen Schuiling (VVD) of Groningen has taken various measures to control parties in the Noorderplantsoen and at the beach by the Dot. The measures will take effect this week.
The Noorderplantsoen and the ‘Stadsstrand’ will become a ‘quiet area’ from 22:00. The police and council officers will monitor this and will remind people of the need to be quiet from 21:30.
Alcohol haas already been banned in two places in the Noorderplantsoen: the area near the pond and the playing field. If violations are found, fines will be issued. In addition, an alcohol ban will apply at the beach from 22:00. This time was chosen because experience shows that nuisance at the Stadsstrand occurs in the late evening and at night.
Area Ban
Last week and the past few days, large groups of people caused frequent nuisance in the Noorderplantsoen and the Stadsstrand. “The police had to intervene three times,” says Schuiling. “There was a lot of noise until deep into the night and this means that there is little respect for the people living in the vicinity of the Noorderplantsoen. In addition, there was aggression against police officers and that is completely unacceptable. In the night from Friday to Saturday, five people were arrested. Based on the information, I will decide whether these people should also receive a longer-term restraining order.”
Waste, toilets and barbecues
To further tackle the nuisance, public toilets and urinals will be placed at the Stadsstrand. The city council believes that these are now sufficiently available in the Noorderplantsoen. However, it is being examined whether larger waste bins can also be placed in the park. In addition, the rules for barbecue use are tightened. “Small-scale barbecue use in designated areas remains permitted, but not too close to the houses. We will also maintain this”, says Schuiling.
The measures apply for the coming summer period.
