Johann and Sally, a couple living in the Paddepoel neighbourhood in the city of Groningen, received a check for more than one million euros on Sunday night from the Post Code Lottery.

Translation by Traci White

The Groninger Internet Courant reports that television presenter Winston Gerschtanowitz knocked on the couple’s door late on Sunday evening to give them the good news on live television.

The couple got emotional when the presenter came to their door: they had been watching the live broadcast and knew that it was likely to be a big check. “We can’t believe it. We never dreamed that we would actually win anything”, Sally said shortly after learning just how much money they had won.

The couple said that they have been playing the Post Code Lottery for several years, and they got even luckier than the average lottery winner: they are busy building a new house, but they were still entering the lottery from their former address.

The Miljoenenjacht game, which is part of the larger lottery, selects a winning address in a particular post code and another winner elsewhere in the country who plays along: a man from Limburg also won 1,026,000 euros as part of the game. Eight other people who participated in the winning couple’s postcode – 9742NA, which is around the Wegalaan in the city – will be receiving cash prizes as well, ranging from 93,272 to 279,818 euros.
