The Brandwagon took the opporunity to film Groningen as a post-apocalyptic ghost town
A Groningen-based video production company, The Brandwagon, has ventured out onto the deserted city streets to film its latest work: ‘The Recruited’. Far from being a biting satire about corporate recruitment processes and being a creative, the duo behind The Brandwagon imagine the company as a UFO bearing down upon Groningen. As reported by the GIC.
Ernstjan Van Dam and Huib Berends went out during the lockdown to make the mini film, as an advertisment for their company. “This project started as a joke, but it got out of hand”, says Berends.
The filmmakers went out during curfew- in the name of art, obviously. “We simulated a city that has been completely extinct for several months due to an invasion by a UFO: The Brandwagon,” explains Van Dam.
The video tells the story of a promising filmmaker who wanders through Groningen with his soul under his arm, because (since the arrival of The Brandwagon) he no longer sees a future. Until he decides there is only one solution, which is to join them.
Assimilation is evidently the answer for the heads behind the video- you’ll find no heroic resistance here. The video ticks all the various UFO-film trope boxes, complete with a dramatic moment of realisation in the shower, a planning board covered in red string, and even a slightly shonky space ship hovering above the city.
The Brandwagon has previously made productions for Mr. Mofongo and the New Energy Coalition.
