The environmental organisation Greenpeace is currently protesting against drilling for more gas in the North Sea and is occupying a new ONE-Dyas drilling platform above Schiermonnikoog.
In a statement, Greenpeace said early on Tuesday, activists climbed the legs of the ONE-Dyas drilling platform to prevent it from being installed. From rubber boats and on the platform, the activists display banners reading “No new gas” and “Protect the North Sea”.
RTV Noord reported that ONE-Dyas was granted permission to drill for gas on the platform last week. It was previously refused permission.
“The climate crisis is knocking on the door. The last thing we need now is even more gas, oil and coal,” Greenpeace said.
Grijsen told RTV Noord that as long as there are people on the platform the drilling cannot continue.
The organisations protesting the platform before, including WWF, have objected to the Council of State against the reinforced permit. according to the Deutsche Umwelthilfe, there’s another request for a building freeze, and they will take necessary juridical steps in order to stop this on the German side.
A spokesperson for ONE-Dyas told RTV Noord that their priority is to make sure the crew and activists are safe.
Back in April, the Dutch Senate voted to permanently close the gas fields in Groningen.
