He can be seen as the godfather of chess. He even might be the best chess player the world has seen yet. And this Wednesday he will be playing at the Academiegebouw. World Champion Magnus Carlsen comes to Groningen to play against defending champion Wesley So at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. In his wake, another twelve of the world finest chess players are present too.
The Tata Steel Chess Tournament is worldwide known as the Wimbledon of chess sport. The tournament takes place from January 12 until 28 at Wijk aan Zee. This edition the organization chose to visit Hilversum and Groningen for an exclusive round of chess. The result? The whole world top of chess will be present at the RUG.
The RUG is delighted. “The university is a logical choice for this tournament. Tata Steel Chess brings science, business, and chess together in the heart of Groningen. We look forward to all the opportunities this tournament gives us”, says Rector Magnificus Elmer Sterken.
Signboard of chess is 27-year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who became a grandmaster of chess at age 13. In 2013 he became world champion. He also broke the rating of greatness Gary Kasparov. He defended his world title two times. Aside from that, Carlsen is a world-famous fashion model.
Carlsen is one of the fourteen grandmasters who will play in Groningen. Dutchmen Anish Giri will face Russian Sergey Karjakin. Giri is currently leading the tournament with Carlsen and Mamedyarov. All of them won three matches along with five draw chess. Carlsen’s opponent is currently fifth with a backlog of 0.5 points. During the tournament, all the players will face each other one time.
The seven matches at the aula of the Academiegebouw start at 14.00 o’clock. At the Offerhauszaal the Groningen grandmaster Sipke Ernst will give his live comments. At several other places at the RUG, there will be side-events to.
