More than 50 percent of the Dutch population are irreligious, and yet Sunday trading hours persist
Translated by Thomas Ansell
The Gemeente Groningen has taken the decision to reverse its policy allowing shops to open earlier on Sundays and public holidays. The shops affected include supermarkets, pharmacies (non-prescription), home shops; garden centres, and more.
Night shops will continue to be able to operate under longer hours, however all others may only open from 12:00 (until 22:00).
As reported by the GIC, the changes will take place from July 1, having been made law in January. On other days, shops may open from 06:00, and close at 22:00.
The extra shopping hours were designed to spread customer numbers across the day and allow for better social distancing.
