A 600-person sit in will take place next week
Students and other residents of Groningen that do not all agree with the intention of the municipality of Groningen to ban the consumption of alcohol in the Noorderplantsoen as of 1 July will protest next week. Some 600 people will sit on beer crates next Tuesday, June 30. The Groningen Student Union (GSb) has said that the ban is “incomprehensible”.
The ban has been in force for some time, but the municipality has announced that it will enforce from 1 July. And that, to many stadjers, is ridiculous. As reported by the GIC.
Some opponents have created an event on Facebook in which people are called on to come to the park with a crate of beer on Tuesday, the day before the ban. On Thursday morning, almost 600 people had registered.
The GsB says that “the Noorderplantsoen is the backyard of studying Groningen. Students can leave their small room to enjoy the sun together. Students desperately need that social contact. Especially now, ” says chair Jan Willem Leeuwma.
