The Municipality of Groningen has agreed with the national government to only use clean trucks in the city
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management has already made such an agreement with Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Tilburg- and now Groningen too.
The garbage trucks will no longer emit any polluting substances, such as CO2 and particulate matter, making them both kinder to the environment and to anyone who is stuck behind one, on a bicycle.
The municipality of Groningen is already starting to replace its fleet. For example, it is intended that six garbage trucks will run on hydrogen by the end of next year. In total there are fifty garbage trucks in the municipality, and, as a bonus, less maintenance is also required.
The replacement of the fleet will be partly financed by European Union subsidies
