Anyone visiting the city of Groningen between 1 April and 1 May could be subject to preventative frisking.
The unusual safety measures are in preparation for a visit by King Willem Alexander on King’s Day on 27 April. Dagblad van het Noorden reports that there will not be widespread frisking: Groningen mayor Peter den Oudsten says that security checks by the police may occur in areas designated as higher risk.
Municipal council
The municipal council in Groningen must approve of the mayor’s proposal before it can take effect, and several parties – D66, GroenLinks and Stad en Ommeland – say that they will need more information first. The council will discuss the proposal next week and vote on it in late March.
