The number of corona infections in the province of Friesland (Fryslân) has remained virtually unchanged over the past week. There were 1173 positive tests compared to 1159 a week earlier. A record number of 13,720 Frisians has been tested, about 3,000 more than a week earlier. The number of vaccinations administered to residents of Fryslân rose sharply, the health organization GGD reports Friday.
The number of positive test results has fluctuated around 1200 per week for seven weeks. The number of tests increased by more than half during that period. It is still too early to draw any conclusions from this development – more testing, no more finding. The recent changes in the measures and vaccination have an influence on this.
More groups, especially students, are asking for tests, according to the GGD. GGD Fryslân is concerned about the high number of infections, especially now that easing of some measures has been introduced.
Elderly
Fewer elderly people have been infected by the corona virus in the past several weeks. Because the oldest people are vaccinated first, there are the fewest infections found in this age group. The number of infected over-90s has fallen for the fifth week in a row. In the 80-90 age group, the decline started somewhat later.
The number of positive tests increased the most among people in their thirties and sixties. There were slightly more infections in primary school students. The number of outbreaks in the workplace increased. There are now 48 clusters of three or more infections in Fryslân. Last week there were less than half that number.
Vaccinations
Last week, the GGD was able to vaccinate 6,889 residents of Fryslân, while a week earlier, 4156 people were vaccinated. The number of vaccinations is expected to continue to increase in the coming weeks. In total, the GGD has now injected 46,652 residents of Fryslân, of which just over 25,000 are people over 70. More than 8,200 Frisians have had two injections. Vaccinations of people over 70 are done not only the GGD but also by nursing and care homes staff and general practitioners. RIVM has now started to invite elderly people aged 75 to 80 who live at home for vaccinations.
Vaccination of the Wadden Islands
In the week of March 22, GGD Fryslân will vaccinate again on the Wadden Islands. The elderly and care workers receive their second injection. In addition, it is also the turn of the 65 to 75 year olds on Terschelling and Ameland. They will receive an invitation for the first shot. On Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog, all over-60s were already eligible during the first round.
Due to the extra vaccinations, the teams of the GGD stay longer on the islands. It takes two days on Ameland (22 and 23 March), on Terschelling three days (25, 26 and 27 March). On March 24 it will be the turn of Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog.
Numbers
With the 1173 infections this week, 28,093 residents of Fryslân have now tested positive for corona. Seven hospital admissions were reported at the GGD (8 fewer than last week) and 16 deaths (3 fewer).
