Political parties in Groningen believe that there should be free menstrual products for women. Research by Plan International shows that poverty has forced one in ten Dutch women and girls to use products such as toilet paper instead of menstrual products, according to OOGTV.
The factions of the PvdA and 100% Groningen therefore want to know whether the city government can contribute to removing the taboo to talk about menstruation and menstrual poverty. The Municipal Executive must also ensure that the Foodbank, clothing banks, the night shelter and the women’s shelter will also offer free menstrual products.
The groups are also asking the city government to offer free menstrual products through schools, libraries and municipal authorities.
