The Municipality of Groningen will be handing out free compost between today and Saturday.
‘Magical’ is likely not the first word you will associate with your thrown-out potato peels, but they are very important. After 3 weeks they turned into compost, which is the key to a blooming garden: compost. And the municipality is handing it out for free for 2 days. Perfect to combine with your purchases at the flower market which is happening at the Grote Markt today
Every year about 11,000 tons of organic waste is collected by the Gemeente Groningen, and from this 4,500 tons of compost are made. Most of this goes to the agricultural sector as a soil improver. The food that grows on this will eventually end up on our plates again.
Compost is the ultimate panacea for your garden. “It makes sure the soil is fertile and there’s a good soil structure.” Besides being good for crops, it’s also good for flowers and other plants. It’s a perfect combination with the flower market to give your plants the best start in your garden.
