Take a trip through Disney history as the animation entertainment behemoth celebrates 100 years of mice, belles and snowmen with a major new exhibition. And not just any exhibition, but an immersive one, because in 2023 you really have to immerse yourself in something at some point. ‘Disney – Telling Timeless Stories’ is a journey through the creative processes behind Disney’s best-loved characters, taking place in the surprising environs of the imposing (and brutalist) Forum Groningen.
Best known for high-production-value, ultra-cutting-edge video art exhibitions, the Forum is billing this event as a more family-friendly affair. The show features original drawings, first sketches, storyboards, and installations all themed around such classics as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Brave Little Tailor (1938), Cinderella (1950), Sleeping Beauty (1959), as well as some later animations. Visitors will be able to take a dip with The Little Mermaid, marvel at Hercules’ abs, and dance with Donald and Goofy. The whole thing is aimed at kids and young adults, and visitors will be able to explore the exhibition with an audio tour, narrated by radio DJ and Disney connoisseur Michiel Veenstra. For very young Disney fans there is also a children’s route.
Tickets are €17,50 and are available on discount for VriendenLoterij VIP card holders. And even though the exhibition is aimed at younger audiences, it’s totally fine to be fully grown and still love Disney.
‘Disney – Telling Timeless Stories’ is at Nieuwe Markt 1, Groningen. April 22 through September 21, 2023. Tickets available here.
