Pink flamingos are not a sight you would normally expect to see near Groningen, but in the past few days, groups of the exotic birds have been spotted at three different locations near the city.
Flamingos were spotted in the Onlanden nature reserve just southwest of Groningen, near the Reitdiep canal northwest of the city and in the Onnerpolder, a wildlife area to the southeast.

Exotic as they may seem, the pink birds did not fly over from the (sub)tropics, as you might expect. Experts have identified the birds by their leg rings as members of a large flamingo colony at the Zwillbrocker Venn, a nature reserve just across the German border.
