Olaf the white seal pup came to the centre earlier this week
Translated by Thomas Ansell
As reported in the Omrop Fryslân, the pup was found in Vlieland, one of the West Frisian islands that sits in the Wadden Sea, near where it becomes the Ijsselmeer. After the stormy weather of the last few days, many hundreds of seals, complete with their pups, came to rest on the island.
Lots of the young pups would have perished in the storm, however Olaf, the pup at Pieterburen, most certainly did. The little seal will, in the coming days, settle at the centre because efforts to locate his mother have not been successful.
In the seal-centre, it was discovered that Olaf is only a couple of days old. One of his eyes is a little inflamed, but aside from that he is in fine health.
Each day, more and more seals appear on the beaches in Vlieland. Centres such as Pieterburen, and wildlife organisations run by volunteers, have requested that visitors and nature-lovers keep their distance so as not to disturb the young pups.
