The development could create carbon-neutral rail travel
The test train will run between Groningen and Leeuwarden from Friday, and was made in Germany by French company Alstom, reports RTV Noord.
Fleur Gräper (D66), of the Province of Groningen, said that there were significant organisational hoops to jump through before the train could come to the North.
“This is a great moment,” says Gräper. “From Friday we are going to test drive for two weeks and next week, March 7, everyone can watch it at the main station in Groningen.”
The tests are needed to assess whether a hydrogen train can easily be fitted into the timetable in the Northern Netherlands.
If the train fits in with the timetable, the provinces of Groningen and Friesland will discuss the purchase of the trains with Arriva.
