One flat located above the Jumbo supermarket on the Oosterstraat in the heart of Groningen was destroyed by a fire on Sunday morning.
Dagblad van het Noorden reports that the fire department responded to the scene at 4:30 on Sunday morning and it was not immediately clear if the apartment was unoccupied.
The emergency personnel were quickly able to determine that no one was inside the flat and evacuated people in neighbouring units to the police department. The fire was under control in about an hour, but it completely destroyed the fact where the fire started.

It likely started due to a fire basket on the balcony. RTV Noord reports that the Jumbo located downstairs also suffered water damage.
