Think of your favourite junk food, make it plant-based, and voila
By Thomas Ansell
At the moment, if you’re a vegan (or indeed vegetarian) in the city of Groningen and fancy something deep-fried and sinful, your choice is essentially what sort of sauce you have with your frites. No more, though, with the announcement that a Vegan Junk Food Bar will open in the city in September.
Last year the company organised a public poll to see where it might open a new outlet, and Groningen handily won. In September you can expect to see the new, neon-hued outlet, open on the corner of the Grote Markt in the new Merckt building, next to the Groninger Forum.
The Vegan Junk Food Bar’s menu is quite something to behold. Aside from the variety (vegan Calimari rings anyone?), it’s not all deep-fried delights. There’s vegan sushi, non-chicken Caesar salads, every type of burger you can name, fluorescent-coloured deserts, and waffle fries: surely the best sort of fry.
Being located on the corner of the Oosterstraat and Grote Markt might make for huge queues on a Friday evening, but if you’d rather enjoy your lekkertjes on your own sofa, it is highly likely that delivery will also be an option. See you in the queue!
