Fan groups lit hundreds of torches, in a route between the Euroborg and the Grote Markt
FC Groningen’s 50 anniversary got off to a bright start last night: at midnight the Martinitoren was lit in the clubs’ colors, whilst more than a thousand fans gathered on the Grote Markt to set off fireworks. Many flares were also lit in the rest of the city.
It will be exactly fifty years ago on Wednesday 16 June that GVAV was renamed FC Groningen. And that is celebrated by the club with, among other things, the unveiling of a statue of club icon Martin Koeman. A special logo has also been developed and season ticket holders receive a special magazine, reports the GIC.
In any case, the festivities got off to a good start. Next to the green and white Martinitoren, a thousand fans were enjoying a decent fireworks show. A ribbon of red torches was formed between the city center, the Oosterparkwijk (where the old FC Groningen stadium stood), and the Euroborg. The route passed in front of the UMCG, too.
