Tens of people gathered to protest widespread climate inaction
Several dozen people demonstrated Saturday afternoon on the Grote Markt in Groningen to draw attention to the consequences of climate change. Recently a US-based environmental organisation demonstrated the possibilites of Groningen being underwater by 2050 if emissions are unchecked.
Saturday’s demonstration was organised by the group Extinction Rebellion, reports the GIC.
Extinction Rebellion is an apolitical organization that believes that much more should be happening to combat climate change and to prevent the extinction of species as a result of that climate change.
Recently, the UN Commission on Climate Change has said that “it is likely that by the end of this century global mean temperature will continue to rise… average sea level rise is predicted to be 24-30cm by 2065, and 40-63cm by 2100. Most aspects of climate change will persist for many centuries, even if emissions are stopped.”
