The substances have been cleaned up, residents Wibenaheerd in Beijum have been allowed back home
EOD (Explosieven Opruimingsdienst Defensie) employees destroyed explosive material that was found in a house on the Wibenaheerd in Beijum in Groningen on Sunday evening. This brought an end to a very worrying weekend for the local residents.
It all started Friday night with a huge explosion in a house. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, but the two residents of the building suffered from minor injuries. They were later arrested for possessing explosive materials, GIC.nl reports.
Initially, the police and fire brigade thought that the explosion was caused by an oven, but investigations on Saturday showed that it was explosive material. During further research, more explosive material was found in the home on Sunday. That too was removed and made harmless.
Only on Sunday evening were the approximately fifty local residents allowed to return home: about twenty people had slept in a hotel the night before.
Incidentally, the police have not yet disclosed what exactly was the explosive material that the two suspected residents had stored in their home and how it could have detonated.
