The Leeuwarder Courant reports that the police took one suspect into custody shortly after the incident occurred. The explosion at the ABN Amro ATM near the Albert Heijn on the Lieuwenburg took place around 3:40 a.m. on Friday.
The ATM was located inside an apartment complex. Residents were startled awake by the sound of the explosion: one resident said that the force of it shook the windows. The police evacuated the building because they were not sure if there were any additional explosives on site.
The explosion caused significant damage to the façade of the building and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit remained on site for hours afterward. Witnesses reported seeing two suspects fleeing the scene on a scooter.
