During the 11th edition of the Terug naar het begin festival on the 25th of May, City Central is organizing an English-language guided bike tour through the province.
The seven-hour bike tour, which will be led by English-speaking guide Joost Nussy, will cover “the landscape, architecture and history of the region”. During the trip, Nussy will share stories about the region’s complex past and its relationship with nature and agriculture, including insights about the raised mounds where many settlements were built in the province.
According to City Central, the bike tour through the province will reveal local cultural highlights and feature the area’s many medieval churches – the province has one of the highest density of ancient churches in Europe.
The cycling route is a part Terug naar het begin (back to the beginning), a three-day festival of music, art, poetry, theatre, dance and visual arts inside the oldest churches in the province of Groningen. The heart of the festival will be the Nicolaikerk in Appingedam, and the municipalities of Appingedam, Delfzijl and Loppersum will be taking part.
The goal of the festival is to encourage people who may be more familiar with the city of Groningen to get to see what the wide open expanses of the province have to offer. The festival is organised in part by the Groningen Churches Foundation, and performances will be put on in the churches dotting the landscape of the province, including those in Appingedam and surrounding villages.
