Once a quiet town nestled in the Drenthe countryside, Emmen is on the cusp of a remarkable transformation. With a healthy financial outlook, a supportive central government, and a surge of interest from developers, Emmen is shedding its small-town image and embracing its potential as a vibrant regional hub.
Emmen’s municipal council, led by Alderman René van der Weide, has set an ambitious target of adding at least 4,000 new homes by 2030, a stark contrast to the pre-2016 era when development plans stalled due to lack of interest. This shift in sentiment stems from several key factors.
Firstly, the Randstad, home to major cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam, is experiencing increasing congestion and skyrocketing housing costs. Emmen, with its lower land prices and more relaxed pace of life, is becoming a compelling alternative. Secondly, the rise of remote work, normalized by the COVID-19 pandemic, allows people to live further from their jobs. Emmen’s proximity to major cities combined with its affordability and serene lifestyle makes it a prime choice for commuters.
Emmen opens the piggy bank: €24 million invested in town’s future
To accelerate its growth trajectory, Emmen is strategically allocating a significant portion of its financial reserves. A total of €24 million will be injected into various initiatives aimed at propelling the town forward.
Expediting housing development receives a €5 million boost to streamline and enhance existing and new housing projects. The Greenwise Campus, a collaborative hub for education and industry, will benefit from a €5 million investment to fuel its development.
Emmen is also dedicated to revitalizing its town center. A new €1 million fund will be established to combat storefront vacancies, renovate facades, and support businesses in relocating or transforming their operations.
Addressing societal needs is another key focus. A one-time allocation of €5.5 million will be set aside for new social development projects. Additionally, €1.5 million will be dedicated to ongoing project plans, with a focus on improving accessibility, developing a sports and recreation campus, and implementing climate-friendly measures.
Emmen’s big league dreams: More than just bricks and mortar
Emmen’s development plans extend beyond simply adding new housing. The town is aiming to solidify its position as a recognized urban center, potentially leading to increased investment and collaboration with other regions. Alderman Van der Weide emphasizes that gaining this recognition isn’t just about status, but about attracting resources and support from the national government to address local priorities.
Emmen’s commitment to social inclusion is evident in its plans to create new sheltered employment opportunities, enhance climate resilience, and provide tailored support for elderly residents who wish to remain in their homes.
By capitalizing on its strengths, addressing its challenges, and investing strategically, Emmen seeks to become a thriving and sustainable community that significantly contributes to the regional landscape of the country.
