The new pool will replace the Aquarena facilities, which will be closing, and should be open next year.
Aquarena, which was built in 1984, cannot meet modern sustainability standards. The facilities use a lot of electricity and has inadequate climate control, and the layout and attractions on the grounds have been deemed too outdated.
Dagblad van het Noorden reports that the new facilities, which do not yet have a name, will be located near the Emmen football stadium. It will include three separate swimming areas: a recreational pool, a pool for disabled and elderly visitors, and a competition pool.
