The elephants at Wildlands in Emmen are getting a belated holiday gift: their own Christmas trees to play with.

The trees are part of the decorations during Wildnights, a holiday event at the park during extended evening hours with laser light shows, camp fires and music. After Wildnights ends on 6 January, the trees will be handed over to the elephants to play with.
Wildlands regularly gives “gifts” to the animals in the park to help them maintain their naturally wild behaviour. Back in November, the park gave its polar bears a block of ice with meat frozen inside to play with and eat.
Other Dutch animal facilities are also recycling local Christmas trees. The Amsterdam Artis zoo will be giving its elephants, giraffes, zebras, camels and miniature donkeys portions of the large Christmas tree that was on the Dam square over the holidays.
