A group of ecologists from Assen sent an urgent letter to the municipal council expressing concerns about local land management.
The ecologists are worried about the unchecked felling of trees and a lack of due diligence. They fear that the haphazard approach poses a threat to the quality of green spaces in the capital of the province of Drenthe.
Dagblad van het Noorden reports that the ecologists describe “unnecessary interventions” being carried out across the region, including older trees being cut down in the middle of a field for no apparent reason.
The group cites the municipality outsourcing land management to a third party as the point that things began going wrong. The ecologists are calling for the municipality to either resume responsibility for local land management or to find an expert organization to take over.
