Dutch newspaper AD releases an annual list of the 100 best evaluated hospitals in the Netherlands. The two specialised clinical hospitals in the north score well, but the regional hospitals in Drenthe were among the lowest on the list.
The list looked at 44 general or regional hospitals and 26 specialised clinical hospitals. The eight academic hospitals in the Netherlands were not included in the evaluation due to the vastly different patient populations that they treat, which is why Groningen city’s UMCG is not listed.
There are around 300 hospitals in the Netherlands, and 26 of those are classified as specialised clinical hospitals, which means that they provide complex care in addition to basic treatment. Regional or general hospitals treat the most common medical conditions.
Treant care group
Dagblad van het Noorden reports that the hospitals owned by Treant care group in Drenthe and Groningen, along with the Isala hospital in Meppel, were the lowest ranked regional hospitals in the list. The rankings are based on performance numbers from the year 2017, and all four of the hospitals are in the process of merging to provide more centralised care in the region.
The AD evaluation looked at a range of criteria to determine each hospital’s performance: nursing care, operations, medication prescription, cancer treatment, cardiac care, and duration of hospital stays. The newspaper changed its criteria this year, so making comparisons to hospital’s performances in previous years is not particularly useful: in total, the Dutch publication’s list is based on 36 indicators.
