Stunningly beautiful landscapes are just a short drive away
According to a 4,000 person poll in the Dagblad van het Noorden, the Drentsche Aa nature reserve is the most beautiful spot in the North. The new natural zone ‘t Roegwold in Central Groningen ended in second place.
The Drentsche Aa National Park is roughly in the shape of a rectangle, and lies between Haren, Westerbork, Assen and Gieten. It is considered one of the most unspoiled stream valley landscapes in Western Europe.
Aside from being beautiful, the Drentsche Aa is a flood plane and water supply for the city of Groningen.
André Brasse from the IVN (Institute for Nature Education) praises Drentsche Aa National Park as “top nature with an age-old story” and praises the alternation of an open and closed landscape.
“It sometimes seems as if it has not yet dawned on Groningen how special their backyard is. The Hoge en Lage der A and the Der Aa-kerk derive their Aa from the Drentsche Aa “,” André Brasse outlines the Groningen connection. “The Drenthe river used to run via the Hoge and Lage der Aa through the city to the Reitdiep and flowed past Zoutkamp into the Lauwerszee.”
