RTV Drenthe reports that the designation was awarded by ACES Europe, a non-profit organization in Brussels which recognises capitals, cities, communities and towns in Europe with a range of sports activities.
More than 30 cities were named during the ceremony, but Drenthe is the first place in the Netherlands to receive the title of European Community of Sport. Roger de Groot, mayor of the municipality of De Wolden, and representative Henk Jumelet accepted the award after travelling to Brussels by bus with a number of other local representatives of various sports initiatives in the province.
