The province of Drenthe has been ranked the cleanest in the Netherlands, RTV Drenthe reports.
The honor was bestowed by beslist.nl which looked at the Central Judicial Collection Agency’s data on fines for littering and illegal dumping. The analysis of all the penalties issued from 2014 through 2020 shows that only 1.7 percent of all the fines were issued in Drenthe.
The province also had the lowest number of fines per person (7.6 fines per 10,000 residents). Among the provinces surveyed, South Holland imposes the highest number of sanctions for illegal garbage disposal at 25 fines per 10,000 people.
At the municipal level, Hoogeveen ended up in the national top three with 35.4 fines per 10,000 residents. Only Rotterdam and the Hague hand out more fines – 56 and 42, respectively.
