Dramatic PR stunt causes panic in Dutch theatres

Letters filled with a mystery white powder were sent to various theatres in the North and Eastern Netherlands

Translated by Thomas Ansell

Whilst it’s well known that drama people can sometimes be a bit… dramatic, it’s not often that self-promotion leads to police involvement. However, an unnamed theatre ‘maker’ has caused headlines this week by sending mystery envelopes of white powder to theatres across the North and Eastern Netherlands.

As reported by RTV Noord, someone from the dramatic arts world tried to promote their new show with the stunt. Perhaps not unexpectedly, the letters caused a panic, and several police reports were made. A spokesperson for the Association of Theatre and Concert Houses confirmed the story to nu.nl, but did not elaborate on how many theatres were involved.

The Groninger police also confirmed the story, saying that the letters were handled as potentially harmful material- although nothing dangerous was found in them.
