The distinctive DOT building, a well-known landmark near Stadsstrand in Groningen, will soon be relocated as its current owner, the Vermaat Group, relinquishes ownership on January 1. According to the Groninger Internet Courant, the municipality is actively searching for a new site for the building, known for its striking dome-shaped structure and its use as a unique projection space.
City council member Rik van Niejenhuis (PvdA) confirmed that an assessment had been conducted to determine whether the building could be dismantled and reassembled at a different location. According to findings, relocation is indeed possible, providing a future for the structure elsewhere in Groningen.
The city is now exploring potential sites for DOT, which, with its round ceiling, serves as an ideal venue for immersive video projections. During the winter, DOT’s illuminated dome is a notable beacon in Groningen, offering both locals and visitors an eye-catching sight. The city hopes to retain this visual appeal at a new site that can continue to serve as a “photogenic calling card” for Groningen.
The DOT building, originally constructed as an eye-catching dome structure, has been a popular cultural landmark in Groningen since it opened in 2014. Located on Vrydemalaan, the building was designed to serve as a multi-functional space, offering a mix of dining, events, and an immersive theater experience. Known for its unique ability to project videos across its round, domed ceiling, DOT has hosted everything from educational shows to cinematic experiences.
