The province has officially confirmed that the wolf has returned to Friesland.
The DNA sample was taken in Boijl, a village where several sheep were bitten to death in April. An animal which appeared to be a wolf was also spotted in the nearby town of Appelscha around the same time, and the DNA test has now officially confirmed that it was indeed a wolf.
Omrop Fryslân reports that carrying out DNA research after a suspected wolf sighting is part of a protocol developed by other provinces.
People have reported seeing an animal that resembles a wolf in other areas of Friesland in recent days: a wolf-like animal was spotted in the village of De Knipe, where several sheep were found dead over the weekend.
Although wolves have been spotted in Groningen and Drenthe, this is the first time that a wolf has been present in Friesland in centuries. The animals typically come from Germany, which is 45 kilometres away from Boijl.
