The shops are generally small and local

Shopping is one of the big draws of Groningen, with the Zwanestraat and Folkingestraat having been named the best shopping streets in the Netherlands at various times in the last decade.
Around half a year ago, a group of shops decided to band together to create a ‘digital department store’, and it has come online just as shopping streets across the country face a huge squeeze on visitor numbers due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The website is called warenhuis.groningen.nl, and includes a huge range of shops across the City Centre. You can be sure that what you’re buying supports the local community, and as a plus you can (almost) be sure that you won’t see anyone else with your most recent purchase!
All deliveries are completed by eco-friendly Groninger start-up Dropper.
Nardia van den Poll, of the Mary Jane Shoe Boutique on the Oosterstraat said: “if you buy a pair of shoes from us, you can be sure that not half of the city is walking around with them.”
Check out the local stores on warenhuis.groningen.nl and scratch that retail itch!
