Groningen Airport Eelde (GAE) revealed the defence ministry is investigating whether to expand its current use as a civil airport to also be used by fighter jets.
In a statement, the airport’s statement responded to a Defence Ministry memorandum stating that the current geopolitical situation may require civilian airports to play a role in military activities. Groningen Airport Eelde has been named as one such example and the possibility of its military use is being investigated.
The airport said it hopes the possible presence of fighter jets won’t hinder the further development of the airport.
