The executive council in De Fryske Marren municipality has fallen due to differing stances on pursuing sand extraction in the IJsselmeer.

The Frisian National Party delegation voted against the plans, but fellow coalition parties CDA and VVD remain in favour. Despite assurances from the FNP that the issue would not bring down the coalition, the VVD had previously stated that they would no longer want to govern with the FNP if they opposed the plans.
Omrop Fryslân reports that the three faction leaders – Jan van Zanden (CDA), Jan Volbeda (FNP) and Olaf Storms (VVD) – met to discuss the situation on Thursday, and decided that the coalition can no longer move forward. The CDA and VVD factions are planning to quickly get to work on the formation of a new coalition.
