Week-on-week infection figures are up, with more and more children becoming infected
In the Province of Groningen 1,020 people became infected with the Coronavirus virus last week, 106 more than a week earlier. According to the GGD, the situation is still “very serious”, whilst it is striking is that more and more children are becoming infected.
The infection rate in Groningen is 175 infections per 100,000 inhabitants, which is lower than the national average (223 per 100,000). From the start of the epidemic, 27,088 people in the province of Groningen have been infected with the Coronavirus, reports the GIC.
The GGD has mentioned a shift when it comes to age distribution. About 11 percent of infections in the last week were in people between 0 and 14 years old. Last week that percentage was 7 percent. About 8 percent of infections are in the 15-19 year group. The proportion of elderly people (65+) fell from 14 to 11 percent.
The shift in ages is also reflected in the suspected source of infection. Last week, 1 percent of infections took place at school and childcare, but now that share is 5 percent. Most infections (57 percent) take place at home.
In the past week, 5 new deaths from a proven Coronavirus infection were reported in the province of Groningen. This brings the total number of deaths since the start of the epidemic to 209. There were 28 corona patients in a Groningen IC unit on Wednesday. That’s two more than a week earlier. There are also 37 patients in a regular corona nursing ward. A week earlier there were 44.
