For the first time, a resident of the Frisian island of Schiermonnikoog has died of the Corona virus. The Wadden Island, the smallest municipality in the country, was one of the last four municipalities in the Netherlands where the virus had not yet claimed any lives.
As reported by the broadcaster for the province of Friesland, currently, the Frisian municipalities of Ameland and Vlieland and the municipality of Rozendaal in the province of Gelderland are the only municipalities without corona deaths.
The death was passed on to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the past 24 hours. The woman died on the Wadden Island on February 26, Omrop Fryslan reports.
Due to their location, the Wadden Islands were spared for a long time from the corona outbreak. Schiermonnikoog was the last municipality where the corona virus was diagnosed in October. However, the island has been struggling with an outbreak since mid-February. In the last two weeks, 25 residents of Schiermonnikoog tested positive.
