The number of infections in the province of Groningen has increased considerably in recent weeks
The last hospitalisation due to the Coronavirus in the province of Groningen dates from 7 May. At that time, 347 people from Groningen had tested positive for the virus, and up until then 74 people from the Province were admitted to hospital. As reported by the GIC.
In May the number of infections increased from 340 to 356 (+16). Eleven infections were added in June, which was also the month with the fewest infections. In July, the number of positive tests rose from 367 to 399 (+32).
However, the number of positive tests has increased considerably in the last week: the counter at the GGD Groningen stuck at 417 on August 4, which is eighteen more than on August 1. According to the RIVM, five more infections were added on Wednesday.
The fact that the number of new infections has not yet resulted in hospital admissions can be partly explained because far more people are being tested. There are also more young people between the ages of 20 and 40 that have become infected with the virus. They often become less ill, but can of course spread the virus.
The increase in the number of infections is leading to extra concern. Nationally, 426 infections were added on Wednesday. A press conference is to be held this evening, in which new measures may be announced. There is a chance that the introduction weeks for students, such as the KEI week, will be canceled.
