City of Groningen offers to receive child refugees from Greece

“We are ready when needed,” said councilor Glimina Chakor (GroenLinks)

The municipality of Groningen has re-iterated that it believes that all children are entitled to shelter, nutrition, medical care and education under all circumstances. Glimina Chakor, a ‘Wethouder’ for GroenLinks, says: “We hope that central government will take responsibility and appeal to us and other municipalities to provide childcare. We are convinced that there is sufficient support for this in the municipality of Groningen. We are ready when necessary.” As reported by the Groninger Internet Courant.

Many Dutch municipalities are urging the government to take in and care for some of the underage children that currently sit in refugee camps in Greece. A national promotion by #SOSmoria will start on Thursday.

The campaign, across multiple Dutch cities, is an appeal to the cabinet to take in children from the camps as soon as possible. This is echoing countries such as Germany and Luxembourg.
