Chiweshe is known for her ‘Mbira’ music
On September 10 at 20:00, the 600-year-old Aa-Kerk in the city center will be the setting of the “De Stroom” Arts Collective’s second event. The Collective, and City Central, have banded together to bring the Zimbabwean artist Stella Chiweshe to Groningen.
Chiweshe was a prominent star in the first days of “World Music” in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. Next to that, she has been guiding traditional ceremonies in Zimbabwe with her music through most of her life. Chiweshe is a breathtakingly powerful and highly spiritual performer. Her traditional “Mbira” music (the word is used to categorise the instrument, the style and an entire culture) is a medium to establish contact with the spirits of the deceased ancestors and thus also able to bring about community among the listeners.
Attendees may bring their own mats if they wish to lie down during the performance. Warm clothes and possibly a blanket are recommended as well.
The capacity is limited (45 spots), so get your ticket in advance here.
