New roundabouts, traffic islands and crossings should improve safety on the motorway between Groningen and Lauwersoog.
RTV Noord reports that collisions are common on this stretch of road, which is why the province of Groningen wants to take action to make it safer.
Roundabouts with cycling paths will be built in Wehe-den Hoorn and Leens to limit the speed of vehicles on the road. Traffic islands will be installed on the portion of the road heading toward Zoutkamp.
The road between Groningen and Winsum will also be changing: 12,000 vehicles travel along the route daily. Tobias van der Velde, the project leader for the planned roadworks, says the portions going through the villages of Adorp, Sauwerd and Winsum will be made clearer. “We want to make it obvious to drivers that they are driving through a town and that they are sharing the road with other users.”
Van der Velde says that the planned changes should not change how long it takes for a vehicle to get from point A to point B. The upgrades should be completed by 2021.
