The Leeuwarder Courant reports that the municipalities of the islands will not be granting camp fire permits for the time being, including barbecues, and it is not yet clear how long the ban will be in place. Smoking is also included in the ban.
A burn ban has been in place in the forests, dunes, nature reserves and roadways and shoulders outside of the village on Schiermonnikoog since Monday, 1 July. The precautionary measures are likely motivated by similar conditions leading to several brush fires on the dunes in July of 2018.
Temperatures are not nearly as high in the north as they were in recent days, but there is no significant precipitation in the forecast for the islands for the coming week.
