A pilot programme to permit speed boats on the Burgumer Mar in Friesland which was introduced in June has already been brought to a halt.
The goal of the pilot, which was approved for a designated section of the lake east of Burgum, was to determine the impact of high speed boats on nature. The Frisian lakes and water sports that come along with them are one of the main tourist attractions in the province.
Even though it was a test that was only set to last between 15 June and 15 September, not everyone was happy with it. Opponents went to court, and the judge ruled that the pilot should be brought to an immediate end, according to a press release from the province of Friesland.
Speed boating on the Burgumer Mar will not be permitted for the time being, and the yellow buoys designating the pilot area have been removed. On Monday, July 29, the court will make a final decision as to whether the trial may continue.
