Barrel was awarded the title during a catering industry trade show at the RAI convention center in Amsterdam on Tuesday. The wine bar opened for business in 2014 on the Haddingestraat in the city of Groningen.
“From the moment that you set foot inside this wine bar, it’s clear that people are here to truly enjoy their wine. This establishment is all about wine: they carry a range of wine books and magazines, and the bar features a small tasting room at the back. The owner and staff all exhibit exemplary wine knowledge and service”, according to the jury.
The Groninger Internet Courant reports that the winner was chosen based on more than 12,000 public votes and series of unannounced visits from members of a jury of experts. Het Eigendom in Rotterdam and Shiraz in Amsterdam came in second and third place, respectively. In addition to the title of the best wine bar of the year, Barrel will also receive a Coravin Wine system and a trip to the Moët & Chandon cellars.
Misset Horeca
Misset Horeca, which primarily functions as a news site for the catering and hospitality industry, creates annual lists of the best cafes, wine bars and coffee shops in the country. In their 2018 list of the best cafes in the country, 14 establishments across the north were included: the highest scoring entry was PéGé in Gieten, which came in 17th place.
The industry publication announced that it would discontinue its best of coffee shops list as of 2019, citing the fact that the goal of the list was to raise the profile and overall quality of coffee served across the country: the organisation says that goal has been achieved. Black & Bloom in the city of Groningen was chosen the best coffee shop in the Netherlands in 2016, and eight coffee shops in Groningen, Drenthe and Friesland cracked the top 100 in the 2018 edition.
